In 2023, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center achieved the highest level of recognition from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Massey plans to celebrate this achievement with a free, family-friendly carnival on Saturday, April 20 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event, held at the VCU Stuart C. Siegel Center (1200 W. Broad St.), is open to the public and takes place directly following the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K.

“We couldn’t have earned this comprehensive status without the partnership of our community members, who help us perform more targeted research to better meet our population’s specific needs,” said Robert A. Winn, M.D., director of the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and Lipman chair in oncology. “This carnival is our way of saying thank you, celebrating and looking ahead to what accomplishments we can achieve together next.”

Massey leaders will provide remarks on the impact of comprehensive status on the community, highlighting the work that Massey does across its catchment area and the contributions of community members.

Attendees to the afternoon event can look forward to:

  • Free carnival-themed food
  • Carnival games from ring toss to tic tac toe, with prize giveaways
  • Bounce houses, balloon artists, face painters and more!

Representatives of Massey’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement team, as well as its clinical trials, development and volunteer teams, will be available to answer questions about the programs, what comprehensive status means for Massey and how interested community members can get involved.

Everyone is invited to celebrate all day with Massey and support its mission toward a future without cancer on April 20 by signing up for the Massey Challenge and running the 10K your way in the morning, and stopping by the carnival afterward to share the cancer center’s comprehensive designation with the community it serves.

The Massey Comprehensive Carnival is free, but registration is required. Click here to register for the event.
